World Boxing Cup: Abhinash Jamwal produces near-perfect performance to storm into 65kg final
After a flying start to the year domestically, Abhinash Jamwal extended his stellar run as he produced a near-flawless performance to reach the final of the World Boxing Cup in the Brazilian city of Foz Do Iguacu late on Friday. Facing Italy’s Gianluigi Malanga, the 22-year-old Indian secured a unanimous 5-0 verdict to enter the title round, where he will face local favourite Yuri Reis. The boxer from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, used his tall frame and athleticism to stay clear of Malanga’s reach. At the same time, he was quick enough to pounce when his opponent’s guard was down. Four of the five judges awarded Jamwal a perfect 30, with all the five judges awarding the first and third rounds to the Indian unanimously. Malanga had to even face a countdown in the first round itself, putting him on the back foot for the rest of the bout. Jamwal has had a sensational start to the year. He won the national title with utmost ease, where he recorded victories over formidable opponents including the seasoned Shiva Thapa and 2022 Youth World Champion Vanshaj Kumar. He is the second Indian boxer to reach the final of the World Cup after Hitesh Gulia defeated French Olympian Makan Traore to enter the title round in the 70kg weight category. Hitesh will take on England’s Odel Kamara in the final. However, Manish Rathore’s campaign in the 55kg category ended at the semifinal stage, as he went down 0:5 to Kazakhstan’s Nursultan Altynbek. This is the first global elite boxing event organised by World Boxing in which Indian boxers are participating, and the 10-member contingent has once again showcased its ability to challenge the world’s best, with two reaching the final and four others making it to the last four rounds. Earlier in the event, Jadumani Singh Mandengbam took the fight to former Asian Under-22 champion Asilbek Jalilov of Uzbekistan but ended on the wrong side of a 2:3 split verdict in the 50kg semifinals. Vishal went down 0:5 against Turabek Khabibullaev of Uzbekistan in the 90kg semifinal while Sachin lost to Poland’s Pawel Brach in 60kg bout.
